Minnesota Scene: Racing commission official wins appeal of reprimand

  • Updated: April 24, 2013 - 12:12 AM

Mary Manney, deputy executive director of the Minnesota Racing Commission, has successfully appealed a written reprimand issued by the commission in January.

The commission notified Manney earlier this month that it would repeal the reprimand and remove it from her personnel file. In a letter released Tuesday by Manney’s legal representatives, the commission said it decided by a divided vote to grant her appeal after reviewing the full record of the matter, including the results of an investigation of Manney and her objections to the process and some of its findings. The commission had voted 5-3 in January to reprimand Manney.

Commissioners, at the time, referred to “a strong case’’ that Manney had violated an MRC rule, and to evidence that she had made “disparaging remarks’’ about commission Chairman Jesse Overton.

U baseball schedule resumes

The Gophers baseball team, after being off eight days, will play a game on Wednesday.

North Dakota State will play the Gophers at Siebert Field at 3 p.m. That game was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Fargo, but it was moved because of poor field conditions there.

The Gophers had a three-game weekend series at home against Michigan State canceled because of the weather. But they remain in first place in the Big Ten with a 7-2 record and a .778 winning percentage. Nebraska, which has played six more conference games, is second at 11-4, .733.

U softball twinbill moved

The baseball team has an artificial turf field that drains well, but the Gophers softball team doesn’t. Its grass field is saturated, so a scheduled doubleheader Wednesday against Iowa State has been moved to Ames, Iowa. It will start there at 2 p.m. The softball team has not played since April 16.
