St. Cloud State University is renaming its hockey arena the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Herb Brooks coached the Huskies in 1986-87 when they finished third in the NCAA Division III tournament and helped elevate the program to Division I status.

Brooks, who died in 2003 and is best known for coaching the "Miracle on Ice" team to a gold medal in the 1980 Olympics, also helped secure the funding for the arena that will now bear his name. It had been called the National Hockey and Event Center.

The arena's $14.7 million renovation is expected to be completed by mid-June.

UAA down to four for hockey coach

Augsburg hockey coach Chris Brown is one of four finalists to be the coach at Alaska Anchorage. Brown was a Seawolves assistant from 1997-2000. He has coached the Division III Auggies since 2006.

The other finalists are Michael Corbett, associate head coach at Air Force, Gary Heenan, coach of Utica College, and Damon Whitten, a Michigan Tech assistant. Whitten also is a former UAA assistant.
