Gophers tie for Big Ten title in gymnastics

The No. 14 Gophers’ gymnastics team (16-3, 6-1) finished one of its best seasons ever Saturday night by defeating No. 20 Ohio State 197.225-195.050 to tie Michigan for the Big Ten regular-season championship. That winning point total was their second-highest ever.

Freshman Lindsay Mable won the all-around with a score of 39.525, which ties her career best. She also won in vault and floor exercise with identical scores of 9.950. Her vault score was the program’s third highest ever.

The Gophers also won the other two events. Cierra Tomson was first in uneven parallel bars with a 9.900 score and Hannah Nordquist and Shannon Golich tied on the balance beam with 9.900 scores, too.

The conference meet will be held Saturday at Michigan State.

U softball shows power

Third baseman Kaitlyn Richardson and right fielder Kayla Wenner hit solo home runs and junior right-hander Sara Moulton threw a one-hitter as the Gophers won 5-0 over Georgia Southern (14-11) at the Sunshine Classic in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Gophers (15-9) took a 1-0 lead on Richardson’s homer — her fifth of the season — in the first inning and scored two more runs in the second on catcher Kari Dorle’s two-run single with the bases loaded. Wenner hit a two-out home run in the fourth.

U wins at Dome

Ben Meyer pitched a five-hitter and had a career-high 11 strikeouts without issuing a walk as the Gophers (12-7) beat Indiana State 3-0 the Metrodome. Meyer improved his record to 3-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.14.

Meyer threw 121 pitches, 86 for strikes, in beating the Sycamores (6-7) in 1 hour and 53 minutes, the fastest game for the Gophers this season.

Ryan Abrahamson and Mark Tatera both went 2-3 with a run scored for the Gophers. Tatera also had an RBI as did Matt Halloran and Andy Henkemeyer.

Four track titles for U

The Gophers won three titles in Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Zach Siegmeier took first in the pole vault (17-4½), Oladipo Fagbemi in the long jump (23-8) and Alex Brend in the 800 (1:51.88). Teammate  Quentin Mege, on the first day of the meet, broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a winning toss of 221-5, which is the top outdoor mark in the nation this season.
