Clutterbuck injury could precipitate call-up; Teemu Selanne on Mikael Granlund

Posted by: Michael Russo under Wild practice Updated: February 15, 2013 - 3:29 PM

Update: As of now, Chuck Fletcher says there are no plans to call anyone up. He believes Cal Clutterbuck will be able to play Sunday vs. the Red Wings; will know for sure tomorrow.

The Wild isn't practicing today, so we probably won't get an update on Cal Clutterbuck until Saturday. He was injured in the first period last night with 6 1/2 minutes left. He tried to come back in the second but that lasted three shifts. He appeared to take a stick to the head in the first.

If he's unable to play Sunday against Detroit, the Wild will recall a forward.

Could it be Charlie Coyle again? Do you go pure offense and speed like Jason Zucker? Do you go with the very complete Johan Larsson? Do you give Justin Fontaine, who has played so well down there, a reward? Or do you go maybe with an energy sparkplug like Stephane Veilleux?

With Coyle and Matt Kassian reassigned, the Wild has no extra forwards on the roster.

My guess is Larsson or Zucker.

As you know Penguins GM Ray Shero was here scouting last night. His son has a tournament here, the Pens play in Winnipeg tonight (although I'm not certain he's attending) and obviously it's well-known the Pens are looking for a top-6 forward. So he was here for myriad reasons.

Samuel Savolainen, the Finnish journalist who moved to Minnesota and covers the NHL for the magazine, Urheilulehti, talked to Ducks legend Teemu Selanne the other day about Wild rookie Mikael Granlund.

Here's some excerpts from his piece here.

"The expectations for him are so high and some people don't seem to understand how difficult this league is to come in. Some adjust quicker, but for some it takes longer."

"But if you start lynching the guy now, it's wrong. There are a lot of stuff that you have to get used to. Everything on and off the ice is new. I know he will come out of this, but he just need some confidence and an understanding how to assemble the pieces in the puzzle."

There has been a lot of negative press in Finland particularly.

"Experiencing this stuff is good. You see the reality of how many friends you actually have. Honest criticism is perfectly fine, that's ok. Because the players are the most critical to ourselves. But when you start to go over the top wit it, I don't think thats fair."

As I wrote on my postgame Canucks blog, be patient. The kid will be be fine.

OK, I'll blog again if there's any news today, but I've got to work on my story for Saturday's paper and my Sunday package now.
