St. John's wins golf championship again

St. John's shot a final-round 291 to win the NCAA Division III men's golf championship Friday in Braselton, Ga. The Johnnies, who won the title for the second consecutive year, finished with a 72-hole total of 1,192 -- three strokes better than runnerup Redlands. Third-round leader St. John Fisher finished third with a 1,199.

The Johnnies were led by Joe Schoolmeesters, who shot a final-round 71 to finish in sixth place with a 294.

Thunder marketing head resigns

Peter Johns resigned as head of marketing and event development with the Minnesota Thunder after about six months with the organization and within days of the its decision to move from St. Paul's Griffin Stadium to Blaine's National Sports Center. "The best thing for the team and the fans is a soccer-specific stadium," he said. "But I'm a Twin Cities guy. I don't know if I'm a Blaine guy." He said he will help the Thunder with its move.

• The Thunder fell to 3-2 after a 2-1 loss to the Silverbacks in Atlanta. Melvin Tarley scored for the Thunder.

• Rob Yodice had three homers and seven RBI in Penn State's doubleheader sweep of the Gophers baseball team at Siebert Field. Penn State won 5-3 and 9-7.

• Top seed St. Thomas was eliminated at the NCAA Division III Central baseball regional in Oshkosh, Wis.

• The Gophers' Victor Almstrom has a 36-hole total of 152 and Clayton Rask 151 going into today's final round of the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio.

• Gophers pole vaulters collected 20 points, led by Ben Peterson's second-place finish, at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Champaign, Ill. Sophomore Chris Rombough won the 10,000-meter title.

• The St. Paul Saints had 15 hits and slugged three home runs but lost 12-8 to the Canaries in Sioux Falls, S.D.

• The Lynx set their opening day roster by placing forward Kathrin Ress on the suspended list.
