Four Minnesotans have been selected to join Team USA for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, Special Olympics Minnesota announced today.

The four are: Beau Karlen, 19, of Mahtomedi; Michael Padgett, 60, of Brainerd; Maria Rassel, 31, of Adren Hills; and Ben von Haaren, 31, of Red Wing.

More than 2,000 athletes from 100 nations are expected to participate at the games, which open Feb. 6 and run for one week.

Karlen will represent Team USA in snowboarding, Padgett and Rassel in figure skating, and Von Haaren in Alpine skiing.

The first Special Olympics World Games took place in 1968 and alternates every two years between Winter and Summer Games.

To qualify for the World Games, athletes must have received a gold medal in their event in state competition.
