Gophers sophomore Leandro Toledo won his first match in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. He beat John Lamble of Santa Clara 6-4, 6-0.

In the round of 16, Toledo will play fifth-seeded Marcus Giron of UCLA.

Swarm sign threeThe Minnesota Swam signed three of its first-round picks from this year's National Lacrosse League draft to one-year contracts. Signing were forwards Kiel Matisz and Shayne Jackson, the third and fourth overall picks, respectively, and defender Alex Crepinsek, taken 10th.

The 6-5 Matisz scored 40 goals for Robert Morris last spring. Jackson led Limestone College to the Division II championship this season. He had 32 goals and 82 points. Crepinsek played for Rochester Institute of Technology and was second on the team with 66 loose balls.

Etc.•Central Lakes College's Jane Peterson was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She has the most wins among active NJCAA coaches and surpassed 500 victories this season.

•Wisconsin assistant coach Bill Butters, who worked with the Badgers defensemen, unexpectedly resigned at the start of his third season. Butters was a former Gophers player and assistant coach. He will rejoin his family in Minnesota. Wisconsin plays the Gophers at Mariucci Arena next weekend.
