The Gophers men's hockey team was picked to win the 2012-13 WCHA championship and Gophers junior Nick Bjugstad was a runaway choice for preseason player of the year in the conference's media poll released Wednesday.

The Gophers, the defending regular-season champions, received 24 of 25 first-place votes. The other first-place vote went to North Dakota, the defending WCHA playoff champion. Denver, Wisconsin and Minnesota Duluth rounded out the top five.

The preseason All-WCHA team included Bjugstad and two St. Cloud State players: forward Ben Hanowski and defenseman Nick Jensen.

For the second consecutive year, the media chose North Dakota's Rocco Grimaldi as preseason rookie of the year. Grimaldi was redshirted after an injury-ravaged season, and he is again eligible for rookie honors.

The Gophers begin the regular season Oct. 12 against Michigan State.

McLeod returns as voice of U hockey

A familiar voice to longtime hockey fans in Minnesota has been chosen to be the play-by-play television announcer for the Gophers men's hockey team, the school and Fox Sports North announced Wednesday. Doug McLeod, the TV voice of the Minnesota North Stars for six seasons, will join analysts Kevin Gorg and Casey Hankinson for FSN's 28 Gophers telecasts in a reunion for McLeod with the university.

McLeod was the first regular play-by-play announcer for the Gophers, spending 16 seasons on TV and radio. In his first full season calling Gophers games (1978-79), the team won the NCAA championship under head coach Herb Brooks. His time behind the mike with the North Stars included calling all six games in the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals.
