3A: St. Thomas 59, Little Falls 44

Last update: March 26, 2008 - 11:24 PM

Cadets break away

Recap: After a tight game early, St. Thomas Academy used its solid ball handling and speed to pull away from Little Falls. Alex Schneider, a 6-7 center, led the Cadets with 18 points and 15 rebounds. He was one of three St. Thomas Academy players in double figures, joining Fritz Waldvogel and Michael Fitzgerald with 13 points apiece.

Turning point: Back-to-back three-pointers by Mike Ratelle and Fitzgerald midway through the first half let the Cadets go from a one-point lead to a seven-point lead. Little Falls never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The quote: "They're a scrappy group. When they come out for warm-ups, they don't put the fear in you, but they're scrappy and well-coached." -- St. Thomas Academy coach Mike Sjoberg on Little Falls' lineup.

Noteworthy: Waldvogel is set to play football and basketball for the University of St. Thomas beginning next year. Wednesday at Mariucci Arena was the first time he'd ever competed in a hockey venue. "I think I skated once, but that was like in kindergarten," he said. "Then it was straight to basketball."
