About to settle in to see which Francisco Liriano and which Samuel Deduno will show up today at Target Field. Both pitchers can put up zeroes and both pitchers can walk everyone in the ballpark. This could be a long, high-scoring game.

But Deduno has made a case to be part of the 2013 rotation. He's embraced change, as pitching coach Rick Anderson has tweaked his delivery to help with his control. He's worked hard and is always smiling in the clubhouse. He's definitely a solid back of the rotation guy, the key for the Twins is finding someone for the front end.

Now, some updates:

Mauer: He ran in the outfield before the game and admitted that he's not where he needs to be before he can return to action. But his back definitely feels better, and he was headed to the batting cage for some swings when we left the clubhouse.

Doumit: He has an oblique strain but wants to play. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he met with Doumit and told him oblique injuries can't be rushed and to be more patient. Doumit will be allowed to pinch hit, righthanded, if he's needed. So get ready for that Doumit- Matt Thornton battle in the eighth inning.

Capps: Matt Capps, out with rotator cuff issues, threw off a mound for the first time since July, and said it went well. He's determined to pitch before the season ends so he can prove to teams that he's healthy. He's going to travel with the team on its upcoming road trip and plans to throw a simulated game midweek.

Hermann: Gardenhire said he's committed to playing catcher-outfielder Chris Hermann, who was called up because of the Mauer-Doumit situation. Gardenhire, however, is trying to put his best team on the field to face the contending White Sox and probably won't give Hermann a shot until they get to Cleveland.
