College football short takes

• Good thing the Pac-12 backed out of its scheduling agreement with the Big Ten, isn't it? It'll save the Midwest some embarrassment. The Big Ten went 0-3 out West on Saturday, and the losses just got more humiliating. Wisconsin couldn't move the ball at Oregon State, Illinois held a turnover party at Arizona State, and Nebraska gave up an astonishing 653 yards, most in school history since 1956, against UCLA. Even the league's 21st century Rose Bowl failures haven't been this ugly.

• Danny Hope said all along that Caleb TerBush would be his starting quarterback, but Purdue sure spent plenty of time in training camp getting Rob Henry and Robert Marve ready to play. Now we know why: Hope intends to use two, and perhaps three, quarterbacks for at least a while. Marve will miss some time after a knee injury that's being described as minor, but Henry and TerBush both will take snaps this week, Hope said. It's a pretty huge gamble for a team that looks like a Leaders Division darkhorse.

• Speaking of quarterbacks, many Iowa fans believed the Hawkeyes might have the Big Ten's best this season, after James Vandenberg's breakout junior season produced 25 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions. But the Keokuk, Iowa, native has taken a step back so far as a senior; through two games, he's barely completed half of his passes, and has yet to throw a touchdown pass. Already there are cries in Iowa City to see what heralded QB-of-the-future Jake Rudock can do.
