Justin Zook of Plymouth won the gold medal Tuesday in the men's swimming S10 100-meter backstroke at the Paralympic Games in London.

Zook set a world record for the classification in a time of 1 minute, .01 seconds to edge silver medalist Andre Brasil of Brazil by one-tenth of a second. Brasil held the previous record at 1:00.55. Zook was reclassified from the S9 class on the eve of the Games, making the victory all the more impressive.

Mallory Weggemann of Eagan, who won a gold medal in the S8 women's 50-freestyle on Sunday, finished seventh Tuesday in the S8 100 backstroke. Heather Frederiksen of Great Britain won gold in 1:17.00; Weggemann's time was 1:23.36.

The women's wheelchair basketball team, which includes Sarah Binsfield of Vadnais Heights and Rose Hollermann of Elysian, won its quarterfinal game 67-55 over Canada. They will play Germany in the semifinals Thursday.

Mooty wins Senior Amateur qualifier

Host club member David Mooty of Eden Prairie led all qualifiers with an even-par 73 at sectional qualifying held at The Minikahda Club for the 58th USGA Senior Amateur Championship. Mooty's round included four birdies and four bogeys, including back-to-back birdies on the 601-yard, par-5 13th and 476-yard, par-5 14th holes.

Also advancing to the Championship is Leif Carlson of Apple Valley, who recorded a 74 with three birdies. Carlson has good memories at Minikahda after winning the MGA Senior Amateur Championship there in 2010. Robert Griesgraber of Vadnais Heights claimed the final spot after recording a 2-over par 75. Griesgraber closed with a 2-under par 35 on the final nine, including a birdie on the 18th hole, to finish one stroke ahead of first alternate Tim Andersen of Chaska. David Kokesh of Bloomington is the second alternate.

The Championship will be held at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, N.J., from Sept. 29-Oct. 4.

Brenda Williams of Windsong Farm and Leigh Klasse of Keller each shot 77 to take the first-round lead in the Minnesota Senior Women's State Amateur Championship at Golden Eagle Golf Club in Fifty Lakes.
