1. MATT BARKLEY, SOUTHERN CAL

Why he could win: He passed for 3,528 yards and 39 touchdowns last season and returns to the best wide receiver group in college football.

Why he won't: It's always tough as the prohibitive favorite. Every mistake or average performance gets magnified.

2. MONTEE BALL, WISCONSIN

Why he could win: He won't have to share the spotlight with Russell Wilson and is a touchdown machine (he scored 39 TDs last season).

Why he won't: A new quarterback and new offensive coordinator could take time to click. Plus, defenses will stack the line to try to stop him.

3. MARCUS LATTIMORE, SOUTH CAROLINA

Why he could win: He's the best running back in the best conference on a team that has a chance to be really good this season.

Why he won't win: He suffered a torn ACL midway through last season. Can he stay healthy and regain his form?

4. DENARD ROBINSON, MICHIGAN

Why he could win: Dual-threat quarterback should put up big numbers and highlight plays. He will get lots of attention if Michigan is as good as advertised.

Why he won't win: Faces Alabama in the season opener and finishes at Ohio State with a trip to Nebraska sandwiched in between.

5. GENO SMITH, WEST VIRGINIA

Why he could win: He passed for 4,385 yards and 31 TDs in 2011 and should pile up impressive statistics again in Dana Holgorsen's pass-happy offense.

Why he won't win: A move to the Big 12 will be an adjustment. He also doesn't have the same national profile as Barkley or Ball.
