Former Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi will be honored in his hometown Saturday, when the city of Chisholm, Minn., renames its high school football field after him.

The field is known in Chisholm as Memorial Park, but a ceremony to rename the facility Joel Maturi Field will be held Saturday.

Maturi said he will be present for the ceremony.

Maturi was a three-sport athlete in high school.

He played football, basketball and baseball as a prep before attending Notre Dame, where he served on the support staff of Ara Parseghian's first national championship football team in 1966.

Minnesota teams win

Mitch Larson pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and striking out one, in Edina's 11-6 victory over Papillion, Neb., in the American Legion's Central Plains Regional Tournament in Dickinson, N.D.

Geoff Fisher finished it off, allowing only one run and striking out one in the last 1 2/3 innings.

Edina first baseman Matt Hopfner had three RBI.

Later Friday, Eden Prairie beat Omaha 9-7.

The game was scoreless until the third inning, in which each team scored a run. Omaha led by a run at the end of the sixth, but Eden Prairie's Kent Curran had two RBI in the seventh. Omaha tied it 3-3 in the eighth, but then the hits really started flying.

The win went to Eden Prairie's Cody Wetmore, who pitched two innings, striking out one.

Edina and Eden Prairie play each other Saturday. The tournament continues through Monday.

Saints fall to Sox

The St. Paul Saints fell victim to Amarillo Sox pitchers Justin Garcia, Trent Lare and Wes Littleton, who combined to throw a four-hitter and end a four-game losing streak. The Sox won 2-0, before 6,157 fans at Midway Stadium.

The Saints changed their name to the "Mr. Paul Aints" for the game because of an atheist promotion but will take their usual nickname when the series continues Saturday.
