2A final: Hill-Murray 3, Edina 0

Last update: March 9, 2008 - 12:22 AM

2A FINAL AT A GLANCE

Recap: Joe Phillippi made 31 saves and Ryan Furne scored two first-period goals as Hill-Murray slew a giant for the second night in a row -- 3-0 over Edina -- to win its third state boys' hockey championship and first since 1991.

The quote: "There's been a lot of doubts about Hill-Murray, getting to the tournament and choking. It feels great to come out on top." -- Senior goalie Joe Phillippi said.

Unsung standout: Hill-Murray defenseman Dan Sova was a rock all night -- and, really, all tournament.

Noteworthy: Furne's second goal came on an innocent-looking shot from behind the blue line as time wound down in the first period. It slipped under the right arm of goalie Derrick Caschetta and into the net with 0.1 seconds showing on the clock.

Three stars: 3) Zach Budish, Edina -- Played a strong all-around game, even in defeat. 2) Ryan Furne, Hill-Murray -- Two goals, including the all-important first goal of the game early in the first period. 1) Joe Phillippi -- The first-team All-Metro goalie was a standout throughout the tournament, allowing just two goals in three games; his shutout Saturday was the capper.
