Deduno to become 11th starter of season

DETROIT - The Twins will use their 11th starting pitcher of the season on Saturday against the Rangers, and his name is Sam Deduno.
Deduno, 29, was promoted from Class AAA Rochester after Thursday's 7-3 loss to the Tigers.
A hard-throwing righthander with a knee-buckling curve, Deduno has had trouble throwing strikes throughout his career, but he went 1-2 with a 2.14 ERA in nine starts for Rochester, piling up 46 strikeouts and 22 walks in 42 innings.
The Twins added Deduno to the 40-man roster, filling the last open spot, and optioned Chris Parmelee to Rochester to make room on the active roster.
Parmelee, 24, hit home runs Saturday and Wednesday, but the Twins were concerned he wasn't getting enough playing time. After June 14, he had only 13 plate appearances.
Liriano unfazedThe Twins likely will look to trade pending free agent Francisco Liriano before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and the rumors are swirling, with the Yankees, Blue Jays and Braves among the potential suitors.
"I try not to pay attention [to trade rumors]," said Liriano, who faces the Rangers on Friday. "My agent tells me sometimes that some teams are asking about me, but I try not to think about it. I just try to get better every day, and whatever happens, happens."
His uncertain future doesn't seem to be affecting him. Since May 30, the lefthander is 2-2 in seven starts with a 2.95 ERA, 46 strikeouts, 18 walks and just 25 hits allowed in 422/3 innings.
Dozier gets pep talkManager Ron Gardenhire pulled shortstop Brian Dozier into his office for a 20-minute meeting Wednesday.
"Young players have things to learn and a lot of things to work on," Gardenhire said, recounting the conversation. "And just because you're the top shortstop prospect in our organization, it doesn't mean there's not another one right on your behind.
"And I'm not trying to scare him. I'm just telling him that you have to get better here [in the majors], too. It's not: 'I'm here. OK, good.'"
Gardenhire reminded Dozier that he relies on the shortstop to "run the game" and scolded the rookie for being out of position on recent cutoff plays.
"He assured me that a lot of rookies struggle when they get up," Dozier said. "But I think he's been seeing a lot of my offensive struggles taken out to defense.
"He takes a lot of pride in the shortstop [position], which means a lot to me. He watches every little move I make, which also means a lot. It was a very good talk, and I got a lot out of it."
Etc.• Matt Capps (right shoulder inflammation) remains on schedule to return from the disabled list July 13, the first day after the All-Star break. He's scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday and might pitch an inning in the Gulf Coast League on Monday before pitching an inning for Class A Fort Myers on Wednesday.
• Carlos Gutierrez, a 2008 first-round draft pick, remains on Rochester's disabled list because of a right shoulder injury and is likely facing surgery, assistant GM Rob Antony said. But 2010 first-round pick Alex Wimmers has made progress with his elbow injury and could return to a mound soon.
