Alise Post of St. Cloud, one of the nation's top female BMX racers, was named Saturday night to the U.S. Olympic cycling team.

Post, 21, returned to competition this spring after a serious knee injury ended her 2011 season. Her consistently fast performances put her second in USA Cycling's BMX power rankings, even though she missed the first two qualifying events while recovering from knee surgery. Last month, she finished eighth in the world championships, the second-highest placement by an American.

Arielle Martin of Spanaway, Wash., won the automatic bid to the Olympic team by finishing fourth in that event to lead the power rankings. Three men and two women will compete for the U.S. at the London Olympics beginning next month.

A St. Cloud Tech graduate, Post became one of the state's best high school gymnasts at the same time she began racking up major championships in BMX. She won three state Class 2A vault titles from 2006 to '08 and was also a top all-arounder.

In 2008, Post already was among the best female racers in the U.S. But she was 17 years old, two years too young to meet the Olympic age requirement for BMX athletes.
