Chart: U.S. Olympic Trials/Diving

  • Updated: June 15, 2012 - 8:13 PM
When: June 17-24

Where: Federal Way, Wash.

TV: NBC will televise five hours of live coverage, including the finals in men's 10-meter platform (June 23, 3-5 p.m.) and the finals in men's 3-meter, women's 3-meter and women's platform (June 24, 2-5 p.m.).

What's at stake: The U.S. has qualified to compete in the London Olympics in seven of the eight diving events. The top two finishers at the trials in each individual event (men's 3-meter and 10-meter, women's 3-meter and 10-meter) earn places on the team. The winners of three synchronized events -- men's 3-meter and 10-meter, and women's 3-meter -- also will make the team. The United States did not qualify for the women's 10-meter synchronized event at the Olympics.

Local ties: Laura Ryan of Elk River, who as a freshman at Indiana won the 2011 Big Ten title in platform diving, will compete in that event at the trials. Ryan, 19, missed the 2008 Olympic trials after shoulder surgery. Though this is a year of transitions for her -- she has a new coach in Todd Waikel and has transferred to the University of Georgia for her final two seasons -- she said she is in peak form. Kelci Bryant, a two-time NCAA champion for the Gophers, will try to make her second Olympic team. In addition to her nine national championships and four Big Ten titles, Bryant, 23, has extensive international experience and is among the favorites in the 3-meter individual and synchronized events. Brittany Viola, a St. Paul native and daughter of former Twins pitcher Frank Viola, is among the top contenders in women's platform.
