1A golf: Lewiston-Altura socks it to competition to defend title

Sporting one of her two pairs of lucky socks -- black, ankle-cut Puma models -- Lewiston-Altura senior Kayley Borkowski helped the Cardinals defend their Class 1A girls' golf title.

Graduating seniors often leave large shoes to fill. In Lewiston-Altura senior Kayley Borkowski's case, make that large socks.

Sporting one of her two pairs of lucky socks -- black, ankle-cut Puma models -- Borkowski helped the Cardinals defend their Class 1A girls' golf title. They shot a two-day total of 709 to win by 15 strokes over Lincoln HI in Ivanhoe on Wednesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.

Borkowski shot a tourney- best nine-hole score of 37 on Wednesday to keep the Cardinals on track.

"Kayley played wonderfully," coach Julie Hennessy said. "She had one bad hole, the only hole I watched her play, actually. So I'm taking the blame for that."

Frank advice from her coach spurred Legacy Christian Academy of Andover senior Rachel Gray to medalist honors. Struggling throughout Tuesday's first round to find her game and her gumption, Gray requested -- and received -- a personality reboot from assistant coach JP Lindgren.

"He comes up to me and says, 'Quit feeling sorry for yourself and go out there and make three pars,'" Gray said. "I went out and made three pars and was like, 'That's what I needed.'"

Tied for first with three other players after day one, Gray pulled away Wednesday for a five-stroke victory and a score of 161.

1A boys: Sage advice for Legacy Christian team

Legacy Christian Academy of Andover senior Andrew Peterson tapped the most personal of advice while addressing teammates before the Class 1A tournament.

A veteran aiming for his second team championship in five state appearances, Peterson encouraged the Lions to savor the moment.

"I've made it more than a game in the past and it's really not worth it," Peterson said. "It's supposed to be fun so enjoy it while you're here."

The Lions shook off one of their highest scores of the year in the first round to win Wednesday at Pebble Creek. They carded a team score of 645 to win by 18 strokes over Wabasha-Kellogg.

Peterson helped Meadow Creek, Legacy Christian's former identity, win the title as an eighth-grader in 2008.

Amid congratulations from his friends and family for winning the Class 1A individual title, Martin County West sophomore Cordell Weber admitted, "I made it harder than it needed to be."

Weber's rounds included double bogeys, three consecutive birdies and two big putts. Erratic iron shots left him putts between 15 and 20 feet from each of the last two holes. He drained each one to shoot a two-day score of 144, edging runner-up Sam Eisenhuth, a sophomore from Northeast Range in Babbitt, by one stroke.

"I knew he was coming," Weber said. "People tell you not to have your mind on it but you always know."
