BOOTSMA BY THE NUMBERS

6 a.m.: Time she rises on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, when she starts her day with a gym workout.

40,000 yards: Distance she swims in a week of high-intensity practices. That's equal to about 22 miles -- or 4 miles shorter than a marathon.

25 meters: Length at the end of a race when strength and endurance become critical. "Your kick can't slow down,'' Bootsma said. "It's the most painful but the most crucial part.''

Zero: Time she spends running. Swimmers, she said, usually dislike that particular form of dryland training.

One hour: Length of the indoor cycling workouts she does at Eden Prairie's CycleQuest studio. "Any more,'' she said with a laugh, "and I would die.''

25 inches: Estimated height of her vertical jump, which trainer Blake Freese said is "phenomenal'' for a female swimmer.

14: Weeks to go until the Olympic trials, with a detailed training plan -- drawn up by coach Kate Lundsten -- already in place for every day.
