A 1-mile race will be held in May.
Brian Mastel is the new race director for the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. He was promoted to that position Thursday, officials said.
Mastel, 34, of Minneapolis, has served as race operations manager for the marathon since 2004. In his new position, he will manage the logistics and operations of all events that take place in conjunction with the 26.2-mile race and oversee growth of new events put on by Twin Cities Marathon, Inc.
"Brian's leadership, knowledge and experience continue to be an invaluable asset to the marathon," said Virginia Brophy Achman, executive director of Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. "His familiarity with the national and local running community ... will be well utilized as we continue to grow and add to the vents we offer throughout the year."
Mastel has already started the Medtronic TC 1-mile with goals of making it the largest one-mile event in the nation. The run will be held May 8 in downtown Minneapolis. Registration will begin March 13.
