Gophers women top Huskies in WCHA opener

Emily West and Amanda Kessel scored two goals each for the Gophers in a 6-0 victory over St. Cloud State in the women's hockey team's WCHA opener Friday at Ridder Arena.

Minnesota moved to 3-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in WCHA play. St. Cloud State fell to 1-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the WCHA.

West's shorthanded score late in the second period was the Gophers' first shorthanded goal of the season. Jen Schoullis added a goal and two assists and joined West and Sarah Erickson as current Gophers players with 100 or more points.

With nine seconds remaining in the second period, freshman Meghan Lorence got her first goal as a Gopher, scoring from freshman Rachael Bona and Bethany Brausen. The goal was the third in 2 minutes, 58 seconds for Minnesota, which led 5-0 after two periods.

The Gophers had a 59-15 margin in shots and have outshot opponents 144-40 in the first three games this season.

Noora Raty recorded her second shutout of the season and 18th of her career.

U ends volleyball drought at Michigan

The Gophers rallied from two sets down to defeat 18th-ranked Michigan 22-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-10 in Ann Arbor Mich., for the team's first victory on the Wolverines' court since 2005.

The 14th-ranked Gophers improved to 9-5 overall, 2-3 in the Big Ten.

Minnesota had three players who posted double-digit kills, led by Ashley Wittman with 20. Katherine Harms added 19 and Tori Dixon 17.

Mia Tabberson had 56 assists, while Jessica Grandquist had a match-high 22 digs.
