Former Atlanta coach Mike Woodson interviewed Tuesday for the Timberwolves’ head-coaching job one day after the team began the process of replacing Kurt Rambis by bringing Terry Porter to town.

Woodson might not be a coach who has fast-break basketball seeping from his marrow — the kind of guy David Kahn said last week that he is seeking for the Wolves’ job — but he does know something about leading a team through the long road of building through the draft.

Woodson led the Hawks from 13 victories during his first season there to 53 and a third consecutive playoffs trip in his sixth season before he was replaced by Larry Drew last year after the Hawks lost to Orlando in the second round.

He also is one of two finalists — former New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank is the other — for the vacant Detroit job and could be using the Wolves interview as leverage to persuade the Pistons to choose him.

Known as a defensive-minded coach, Woodson, 53, played for Bob Knight at Indiana and was a longtime NBA assistant, including time spent working for Larry Brown.

Expect the Wolves to bring more candidates — including former Golden State coach Don Nelson and Portland assistant Bernie Bickerstaff, even though Bickerstaff’s son J.B. has taken a job with Houston — to town for more interviews with Kahn and owner Glen Taylor in the next week. Expect Nelson to interview either Thursday or Friday.

It’s conceivable the Wolves still could pair the father-son team together — believed to be one of Kahn’s original plans — by giving J.B. an associate head coach title before he ever really goes to work for Kevin McHale and the Rockets.
