Vikings deadline for camp might have leeway

The Vikings have told Minnesota State University officials that they will let them know by Monday whether they will conduct training camp in Mankato this summer.

However, there might be some leeway available for that decision to be pushed back a few days if it appears the NFL lockout is going to be resolved next week.

Lester Bagley, the Vikings vice president of public affairs and stadium development, said the team has been in contact with Minnesota State leaders on a daily basis. Hope remains that a collective bargaining agreement can be worked out sooner rather than later.

The Vikings plan to report to camp on July 31, but there is a chance that even if that date is pushed back a bit that the Vikings could hold a shorter camp in Mankato.

"We want to give this every opportunity to have business as usual, meaning conducting training camp in Mankato," Bagley said Wednesday morning after a news conference was held at the Metrodome following the inflation of the building's new roof. "It's a fluid situation. Hopefully, the reports are accurate in reaching a CBA."

The Giants, Jets and Ravens all have announced they will be staying at their headquarters for training camp instead of going off-site because of the logistical issues that have been caused by the uncertainty about when the lockout will end.

If the Vikings don't go to Mankato, the team will hold its training camp at its Winter Park headquarters in Eden Prairie.
