Four-star cornerback among 3 verbals to Gophers

The Gophers landed three verbal commitments Monday, highlighted by four-star junior college cornerback Traye Simmons, according to Rivals-based Gopherillustrated.com. Simmons, who played at College of the Sequoias (Calif.), had offers from Florida and California, among other schools.

The Gophers landed three verbal commitments Monday, highlighted by four-star junior college cornerback Traye Simmons, according to Rivals-based Gopherillustrated.com. Simmons, who played at College of the Sequoias (Calif.), had offers from Florida and California, among other schools.

The Gophers also received verbal commitments from two-star running back Maurice Greer of Garden City (Kansas) Community College and two-star athlete DaJon McKnight of Dallas Skyline High School. McKnight is the third Skyline player to commit to the Gophers for the 2008 class.

• DeMarco Murray, Oklahoma's leading rusher, has a dislocated kneecap and will miss Saturday's game against Oklahoma State. Murray was injured while trying to recover an onside kick in the final minute of a 34-27 loss at Texas Tech.

• Purdue wide receiver Selwyn Lymon was arrested early Sunday morning in West Lafayette, Ind., and charged with drunken driving and resisting arrest.

• Arkansas-Pine Bluff fired coach Mo Forte, a former Gophers player and assistant coach, after a 4-7 season and promoted defensive coordinator Monte Coleman to head coach. ... Alcorn State fired coach Johnny Thomas, who was 2-8 this season and 48-61 in 10 years. ... Rhode Island fired coach Tim Stowers, who was 3-8 this season and 33-57 eight seasons.

• La Salle University in Philadelphia dropped its football program for the second time, citing a shrinking number of conference foes for shutting down a program it revived in 1997.
