U rowing ends fall season

The Gophers rowing team closed its fall season Sunday at the Cal-Sag Collegiate Regatta in Chicago. The Gophers had four boats compete in the regatta with three finishing in the top 11 overall.

The Gophers' first varsity eight finished fourth in the A final in 6 minutes, 58.498 seconds. Wisconsin won at 6:45.499, followed by Michigan State at 6:45.767 and Michigan at 6:55.451.

The Gophers' third varsity eight won the C final.

Exhibition basketball

Adam Viet scored 22 points, and Northern Iowa used a 13-0 run in the first half and never looked back in an 80-61 exhibition victory over Bemidji State in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Sunday.

Eric Coleman, a former Tartan standout, had 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting for the Panthers. Alex Smith scored 16 points for the Beavers.

• The No. 9 Gophers women's swimming team beat No. 10 North Carolina 208.5-160.5 in a dual meet Saturday night at University Aquatic Center. After capturing all but one event on Friday night in building a 123.5-62.5 lead, the Gophers collected four more event victories Saturday to clinch the meet.

• Kristin Storrs had 16 kills and hit .500 to lead top seed and host St. Thomas (26-4) to a 32-30, 30-24, 30-28 victory over No. 2 seed St. Benedict (21-10) in the MIAC volleyball playoff finals. St. Thomas will play host to one of eight regionals in the NCAA Division III tournament; the NCAA said the 61 teams for the D-III field will be announced today.

• St. Benedict (15-5), which lost to Concordia (Moorhead) 2-0 Saturday, earned an invitation to the NCAA D-III women's soccer tournament. Full pairings will be announced today.
