Former USC tailback Moody transferring to Florida

Last update: August 27, 2007 - 9:41 PM

Florida coach Urban Meyer accidentally confirmed Monday former USC running back Emmanuel Moody is transferring to the defending national champions.

"He's not here yet," Meyer said during his weekly news conference.

Meyer quickly realized his error and said, "He's not here." Then he paused and said, "Oops."

Moody decided to transfer after getting caught in a glut of highly touted tailbacks. He has to sit out the 2007 season under the NCAA's transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining. He gained 458 yards last season for the Trojans.

Hokies open at home

This wasn't the kind of attention Virginia Tech and East Carolina were counting on a few years ago when they signed an agreement to resume their dormant series.

A campus rampage that left 33 dead in April left the Virginia Tech campus in search of catharsis, and many in the community spent the summer pointing toward Saturday's game as the next step in the healing process.

Said East Carolina coach Skip Holtz: "I'm glad that we can be part of those ceremonies, but we still have to understand that we're going up there to play a football game, and that's what we have to get prepared to get ready to do."

Etc.

• Alabama receiver Keith Brown and linebacker Prince Hall, both starters in 2006, have been suspended for the season opener for violations of team rules, coach Nick Saban said.

• South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman upheld the one-game suspension of Gamecocks quarterback Blake Mitchell, who will miss the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. Mitchell was suspended for missing summer school classes.

• Former Louisiana Tech All-America receiver Tommy Spinks, a favorite target of quarterback Terry Bradshaw, died Sunday at his home in Arlington, Texas, following a short illness. He was 58.
