Tropical Depression Soudelor will bring heavy rain to extreme southern China and northern Vietnam on Sunday. Soudelor was briefly a tropical storm as it moved across the South China Sea. Even as a tropical depression with winds of 35 mph, it will produce widespread heavy rain. Amounts could top 5 inches across Hainan Dao, China's southernmost island. Amounts may be even higher over the mountainous terrain of northern Vietnam.

Soudelor brought very heavy rain to the Philippines as it passed through on Thursday. Rainfall at Laoag on Luzon topped 13 inches. While winds are not expected to be a problem as Soudelor moves across southern China and Vietnam, heavy rainfall could easily trigger flooding. This area has seen above-normal rainfall for the past few months. So already saturated hillsides could easily produce mudslides.
