A thick plume of smoke seen rising from a downtown Minneapolis high-rise Tuesday afternoon resulted from a maintenance crew changing fuel on the rooftop and not from a fire, a Minneapolis Fire Department spokesman said.

Crew were called to the 30-story Ameriprise Building at 707 2nd Av. S. a little before 1 p.m. and found smoke coming from a rooftop mechanical appliance, said Assistant Fire Chief Charles Brynteson.

There were no injuries, and workers in the building were not evacuated, he said.

"It was never a threat," an Ameriprise spokeswoman said. "[All of our employees] are safe and it's business as usual."
