E-mail this Slide ShowThe Minnesota National Guard brought Lamyaa Kareem and her mother, Shanna Hassan, from Iraq to Minnesota for surgery to correct the teen's severely curved spine. The mother and daughter stayed with a host family, Johanna and Duncan Clyborne. In the the nine weeks that the two mothers lived under the same roof, they learned to navigate each other's culture to find common bonds.
