The Sigma Foundation Book Scholarship
High School juniors and seniors in the Twin Cities area are invited to compete for $2,000 in prize money by participating in the essay contest where they will be asked to share their thoughts on one of the most noteworthy accomplishments of one of the most prominent African American inventors, George Washington Carver. Each entry needs to include the applicant’s name and the high school that they attend, along with their parent’s contact information.
ESSAY QUESTION:Legendary Phi Beta Sigma Man, George Washington Carver was known for inventing over 300 uses for the peanut. Which one of these inventions is the most valuable to you and why?”
ELIGIBILITY: Male and female college-bound high school juniors and seniors attending public, private, religious, or charter schools.
ESSAY LENGTH: Minimum of 350 words (which is roughly one page and a half double spaced).
JUDGES: Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity
STUDENT CASH PRIZES: $500 book scholarships for the Top 4 entries.

DEADLINE FOR ESSAY SUBMISSIONS: December 30, 2010. All essays must be submitted in Microsoft Word format, double spaced and sent to PBSEssayContest@gmail.com.
WINNERS ANNOUNCED: January 3rd and awarded at the Phi Beta Sigma Founder’s Day Celebration on Saturday, January 8, 2011. Winners will receive complimentary tickets to the Founder’s Day Celebration for themselves and two guests.

On Saturday January 8th, 2011 Phi Beta Sigma - Minnesota will celebrate the founding of this fraternity which upholds the principles of Brotherhood Service and Scholarship! This year's theme is Empowerment Through Development with a focus on Bigger and Better Business.
The program for this event will begin at 6:00pm dinner will be served and the program will include the distribution of four (4) $500 scholarships to local youth! as well as recognition of local community partners who have worked diligently with Phi Beta Sigma to facilitate strong programs that have had a great impact on the Twin Cities and the great state of Minnesota as a whole.
Celebrate with us decades of service to this community and others nation wide. Enjoy Live music immediately following the program with a great DJ closing out the night on an incredibly fun and high-energy note as we move into the next year of uplifting our community.

Ernest Comer III is a community relations professional with several years of experience working with non-profit organizations. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota in Communication Studies with an emphasis in African and African American Studies. Ernest is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated and has held positions of leadership in organizations such as PRISM at the University of Minnesota, and emerging non-profit in Ramsey County, Re-Armor Homes. He has been an adolescent mentor in the Pediatrics Department at the U and has hosted local television and radio shows showcasing young talent.
