Haley Lickfold won her first girls’ tennis state tournament match a year ago as a freshman. This season, Lickfold is playing like a seasoned veteran.
The Shakopee sophomore has climbed to No. 5 this year in the Class 2A individual rankings, according to the coaches association poll.
“She has come into her own this season,” Shakopee coach Susan Allen said.
A year ago, Lickfold fell to Eagan senior Danielle Donahue 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the state tournament. She bounced back to defeat Bemidji senior Jessica Solberg 6-4, 6-2 in the consolation bracket before being eliminated by Wayzata’s Kelly Yang 6-2, 6-3. Yang, now a junior, is ranked third in the state, according to the coaches poll.
So far this season, Lickfold has accumulated a 12-2 record while playing at the top singles position for the Sabers. She has been starting since she was a seventh-grader.
“She has won two positional tournaments this season,” Allen said. “Haley stepped up to the challenge immediately when our schedule allowed her to play those top competitors.”
