Minneapolis native heading into astronaut Hall of Fame

Last update: May 2, 2008 - 9:12 AM

A graduate of Minneapolis Washburn High School is part of the induction class this weekend into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.

Shuttle astronaut Bob Cabana enters the hall Saturday during ceremonies at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Cabana's made four trips into space: Discovery (1990, 1992), Columbia (1994) and Endeavour (1998). He logged more than 1,000 in space on those four missions.

His fellow inductees are veteran Shuttle astronauts John E. Blaha, Bryan D. O'Connor and Loren J. Shriver. Cabana, 59, was born in Minneapolis, where his parents still live. He graduated from Washburn in 1967 and received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1971. He retired from the Marines as a colonel in 2000.
