Second-seeded Wayzata is upended in 4A section semifinals

BOYS' BASKETBALL

• COOPER 70, WAYZATA 67: The Hawks, seeded third, upset the second-seeded Trojans in the Section 6, 4A semifinals Saturday. Melvin Newbern had a game-high 28 points for Cooper. Damien Gordon added another 21. Johnny Beeninga lead Wayzata with 18 points. The Hawks will take on Hopkins in the section championship.

• BLAINE 45, ANDOVER 44: Ben Scherer made a free throw with 0.2 seconds remaining, lifting the Bengals past the Huskies in a section semifinal Saturday. The top-seeded Bengals finished the game on a 15-9 run and advanced to the Class 4A, Section 7 championship game.

• EAGAN 51, BURNSVILLE 49: The second-seeded Wildcats held off the Blaze in the Class 4A, Section 3 semifinals. Dan Stahlhut scored 14 points to lead the Wildcats. Collin Anderson scored 11 and Sam Schuberg had 10 for the Wildcats. Andrew Hanson's 20 points led the Blaze.

• APPLE VALLEY 73, ROSEMOUNT 43: Cameron Kirksey scored 23 points to lead the Class 4A No. 1 Eagles past the Irish. Gary Trent Jr. scored 21 points and Brock Bertram had 10 for the Eagles.

• DELANO 81, ORONO 79: Sophomore Calvin Wishart scored a season-high 39 points to lead the Tigers to the 3A section championship game. In two previous matchups against the Spartans he scored 37 and 28 points. Matt Kreklow blocked Samuel Sustacek's shot at the rim as time expired.

• DELASALLE 76, MINNEAPOLIS HENRY 69: Goanar Mar scored 34 points to lead the Islanders into Thursday's section final against Delano. The junior also blocked Demetress Edwards-Brown's shot that would have pulled the Minutemen within a point. DeLaSalle, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, held Henry to five points in the last four minutes. Edwards-Brown had 28 points.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

• ST. PAUL COMO PARK 91, MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST 89: Como Park senior Andrayah Adams scored a season-high 43 points. She is averaging 24.3 points per game. The Cougars, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, have lost just once since Jan. 1.
