Cyclones off the charts
Brock Purdy threw for a career-high 435 yards and tied a school record with six touchdowns as Iowa State throttled Louisiana-Monroe 72-20 in Ames, Iowa. Purdy tossed three touchdown passes and ran for 75 yards and three TDs for the Cyclones (2-1), becoming the first player in school history to surpass 500 yards of total offense. Iowa State amassed 714 yards, breaking a record set in 1949.
'Horns off the hook
Texas ended a four-game losing streak against Big 12 rival Oklahoma State with a 36-30 victory in Austin Texas, holding national rushing leader Chubba Hubbard to 121 yards but only 3.3 per carry. Sam Ehlinger had his third four-TD passing game of the season for the Longhorns (3-1, 1-0).
Kyle Trask threw for 293 yards and two scores, and No. 9 Florida beat Tennessee 34-3, the 14th victory for the Gators (4-0, 2-0 SEC) in the past 15 meetings with the Vols (1-3, 0-1). Trask's last start was in 2012 for the freshman team at Manvel (Texas) High School … SMU beat No. 25 TCU 41-38 in Fort Worth, behind two TD passes from Shane Buechele. The Mustangs, 4-0 for the first time since 1984, had lost the past seven games with the Horned Frogs (2-1) by an average of more than four TDs.
Transfer comes through
Cam Akers scored three TDs and Alex Hornibrook, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, came in after starting quarterback James Blackman suffered a knee injury and threw a 60-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as host Florida State (2-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) topped Louisville 35-24. Hornibrook completed 15 of 20 passes.
Big stop for Orange
In a game in which the teams combined for more than 1,100 yards, a defensive stop helped Syracuse seal a 52-33 home victory over Western Michigan. The Broncos (2-2) had rallied to within 38-33 with about 10 minutes to play. But on fourth-and-1 from their own 42, the Broncos' Davon Tucker was stopped short. Syracuse (2-2) had totaled only 50 points in its previous three games.
