Safco Products Company, a New Hope-based provider of commercial office furniture and organizational products, has acquired the assets of Focal Upright Furniture LLC, a maker of ergonomic office furniture.

Focal Upright Furniture is based in North Kingston, R.I. Their innovative designs of office chairs and desks focus on active movement and ergonomic design.

Focal desks and office chairs promote a leaning posture between sitting and standing.

“At Focal, we have been attempting to create an upright revolution that helps deskbound workers tap into their full human potential,” said Martin Keen, Focal’s CEO and head designer in the news release. “We are thrilled to be partnering with a well-established brand like Safco.”

Safco will take Focal’s products and their existing standing and active seating products to launch a new Safco Active Collection of office furniture.

“The acquisition of Focal Upright allows Safco to further expand our product and knowledge base around the growing trend of Active Working,” said Safco General Manager Paul Griffiths in the release.

Keen, the founder of Focal Upright, turned to furniture design after a successful career designing footwear. An avid sailor, he designed a sailing shoe for himself and then founded KEEN Footwear in 2003. Keen sold his share in the footwear company in 2010 to focus on furniture design and introduced his first office chair design in 2012.

Keen will continue to work with Focal Upright but remain based in Rhode Island.

Safco sells more than 2,200 workplace products. Focal Upright products will be sold under the Focal Upright brand name and distributed through Safco’s network. Safco Products is one of seven companies owned by New Hope-based Liberty Diversified International.

Terms of the transaction between the two private companies were not disclosed.
