I'm continually amazed how good 30 feels after a few days in single digits and teens. Everything is relative, I guess. The sun will be out today, a shot at 30 (above!) before we cool off a few degrees over the weekend. A badly needed January Thaw is still on track for next week, 3-5 days at or just above 32 F, even a little rain/snow mix by Thursday of next week. Long-range GFS guidance is hinting at a subzero spell the third week of January, which makes sense, considering the coldest air of winter usually arrives the second or third week of this month. But why does it come nearly a month after the Winter Solstice? A feeble explanation in the blog, along with a 2012 climate video recap, and more jaw-dropping statistics about the warmest year in recorded U.S. history.

Temperatures moderate a bit Friday into the weekend (closer to average) and long-range guidance pulls milder, Pacific air into town next week, 3 or 4 days near freezing. It may rain (a little) next Thursday. In mid-January. Go figure. Colder air is likely by the third week of January. Snowcover updates (kind of sad), more information on record warmth in 2012. A dusting of flakes is possible today as temperatures trend a bit warmer - 32 by Friday will feel like a genuine warm front (Minnesota style). No significant snow is in sight - nothing new there, in fact we should see a few days next week at or above freezing. Today's blog has more on 2012 (only 1931 was warmer, and only by a meteorological whisker), one of the lowest tornado counts on record last year, and "Can The West Survive"? Climate change is already showing up in the data, especially west of Denver. Hope you have a good Wednesday. Me? I'm recovering from a welcome college-football-hangover...

It's a far cry from what we were dealing with at the beginning of the month. 2012 will wind up as the warmest year on record for the nation with a record low number of tornado and severe thunderstorm watches since 1997. The nationwide tornado count for 2012 will also wind up being nearly 400 less than the 7 year average. So long 2012, a year of extreme heat and drought.
Like a switch, temperatures across the nation have flipped into a much colder than normal pattern. This is a pattern that looks to continue through much of next week. The storm track has been shoved to the south, bringing snow to places like Texas, then eventually to Maine. There's another system developing for the early part of next week. It'll miss Minnesota, but cold air will be firmly in place through then. I still don't see any substantial snow storms for us... it looks like a shovel free forecast for a while. -Todd Nelson

The latest surge of Canadian air has pushed the storm track well south of Minnesota; blizzard conditions likely today and tomorrow from Arkansas to Ohio and upstate New York with a few tornadoes over the Carolinas. I still don't see any storms (for us) into the first week of 2013. No bitter, subzero blasts either, in fact I suspect a thaw by the second week of January. Today's blog has more on extreme weather to our south/east, a look back at 2012, comparing Christmas snow cover, and how polar satellites were critical in providing an accurate track forecast for Sandy.

This is about as chilly as its going to get - 20s returning by the end of the week. Big shock: no accumulating snow is in sight looking out 2 weeks. If your travels take you into the Ohio Valley or East Coast you will run into foul weather tomorrow and Thursday; a swath of heavy snow from Little Rock to Cleveland and Syracuse, a few tornadoes over the Deep South (today) and heavy, windswept rain (and severe storms) from Atlanta to D.C. tomorrow, minor flooding may spread into New York City and New England Wednesday, mixing with snow inland before tapering. The cold is annoying, but for the near term all this Canadian air will inoculate us from major storms. A small price to pay.

We may see a few Christmas flakes today, no more than a dusting expected in the metro. The next clipper arrives tonight, a transfusion of colder air just in time for temperatures near zero Christmas morning. Yes, December 25 may wind up being the coldest day of December - a month that hasn't been all that cold. Looking for snow? Try Oklahoma City, Indianapolis, maybe Columbus or Cleveland by Wednesday, as the next big storm takes a detour well south/east of Minnesota. The east coast will see wind-whipped rain Wednesday; I could see travel delays. A couple of chilly days are on tap, but temperatures rebound to near freezing by Sunday, and I see a January Thaw brewing for the first weekend of 2013. The drought is still showing up on the maps; I hope we break the cycle soon, for the sake of frustrated snow lovers (who love to vent to yours truly) and Minnesota's farmers, who are facing real problems next year if we don't pop out of this dry cycle. Have a great Christmas Eve!

A dry west/northwest wind flow keeps us partly sunny and chilly until further notice. Enjoy today's "warm front" (mid to upper 20s) because the mercury may struggle to rise above 10-13 F. on Christmas Day. Long range models are hinting at a little snow in a week, but right now it doesn't look like The Big One. Today's blog has more on the solstice, 2012 factoids (another crazy year of weather) and some other stuff I threw in for good measure. Have a great weekend!

Yes, that's snow....a rare sight lately. The best chance of a couple inches? Southern and eastern suburbs, where the commute will be extra-slow this morning. The far northern and western suburbs may see a coating. Blizzard conditions are likely over Iowa and Wisconsin, brushing far southeastern Minnesota - not sure I'd be too excited to drive to Rochester and La Crosse today. Conditions improve tomorrow under bright sun with less wind - good travel conditions into Christmas Day. Temperatures trend colder over the next 5-10 days, shoving the main storm track south/east of Minnesota. No, snow lovers just can't catch a break. Details on the blog.

A snowstorm is a testy marriage of cold air and southern moisture. Too much of either and the storm fizzles, or shifts. That will be the case Thursday - too much cold air (at least for MSP), with the zone of heaviest snow setting up 100-300 miles south/east of the Twin Cities. If you're driving into Iowa or Wisconsin Wednesday night or Thursday you'll want to stay up on the latest forecast. A cold weekend is on tap, slight moderation in time for Christmas, but the snow in your yard should pretty much still be there Christmas morning. Another major storm is brewing for the middle of next week (this one may also take a track too far south/east of town to dump much snow on our heads). It seems fairly certain that this storm will inhale the coldest air of winter (so far) into Minnesota, with a couple of subzero nights conveniently timed for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Who says Mother Nature doesn't have a well developed sense of humor?

I don't know about you - but I've been going thru the motions since Friday. Numb. Any parent, no, anyone with a pulse and a conscience can't help but watch the events in Newtown and be heartbroken. Everything else seems pretty inconsequential right now. On the weather front I don't see any significant snows for MSP between now and Christmas Day; a little snow is possible Tuesday, maybe an inch. I still think we'll salvage a white Christmas, but just barely. Long range guidance is suggesting the first subzero smack for New Year's Day, and CPC is hinting at some improvement to our long-term drought. I hope NOAA is right. Have a good Monday...

Welcome to an early March: upper 30s yesterday with nearly a half inch of rain (falling on our precious snow - not good). Farther north and west there was less rain, more snow: 1.4" St. Cloud, 2-4" for Brainerd, over 5" up at International Falls. Yes, it's odd tracking rain bands 6 days before the Winter Solstice. A fairly good travel week is shaping up for Minnesota, any big storms detouring south/east of MSP into next weekend as temperatures trend downward. A storm for Christmas Day? Details on the blog.

We're forecasting another wintery system to move into the upper Midwest late Friday into Saturday that may bring a mixed bag of freezing rain and snow for any travel this weekend. This system does not have as much arctic air to work with, allowing the possible mix to occur. Keep an eye on future forecasts this week as we get more information on this storm, and better pin down what precipitation we will get, when it will occur, and how much. We're also watching the possibility of a storm on the east coast next week. The weather is definitely more interesting when it's busy... - Meteorologist D.J. Kayser
