Climax man dies in flood; Fargo-Moorhead prepares for new crest

Last update: June 10, 2009

The body of a man from rural Climax, Minn., reported missing late last week has been found in the Red River.

Polk County Sheriff's officials said Monday that the death of Harold M. Hofer, 58, was related to flooding.

Authorities say it appears Hofer tried to drive on a road that was flooded by the Red River last week. The water has since gone down, and the pickup truck Hofer was driving was found Sunday about 30 yards from the road. His body was recovered Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, work has begun to raise levees in Fargo, N.D., from 43 feet to 44 feet to protect against a second Red River flood crest expected this month. City officials said residents may have to raise sandbag dikes.

The U.S. Corps of Engineers said it will raise many of its earthen dikes built in the Fargo and Moorhead, Minn., areas before the river crested March 28.
