From my colleague, Lora Pabst:

A Golden Valley homeowner was happy to have insurance after a big storm blew through in 2008 and did $56,000 worth of damage to her house. After her siding, roof and windows were replaced, she got another surprise: her insurance premiums went up 50 percent.

"I think it's unfair," she said. "A natural disaster is a natural disaster. That's why you pay insurance premiums."

According to the state commerce department, insurance companies can't decline to renew your policy because of a claim related to natural causes. But no state laws prohibit them from raising premiums because of these kinds of claims, according to the agency.

Do you think insurance companies should be allowed to raise premiums after a big storm?
