This last weekend, all of Wisconsin, and Wisconsin/Minnesota border waters opened to Musky fishing. Reports varied across the state, some seeing and catching some fish, and some with little action. On Saturday we launched our boat just before 5 am and discovered more than a few boat trailers already in the parking lot. It didn't take long as my friend hooked a nice fish with a jerkbait at about 5: 50 am. When I attempted to slip the net under the fish, he shot down under the boat and managed to get off. We estimated the fish in the low to mid 40 inch range. Unfortunately, that would be the last chance for a musky we would have that day. While fishing a new spot, I did catch a thick 37 inch Northern on a Musky Mayhem Baby Girl.

After a long day of fishing in less than ideal conditions of lots of boat traffic and clear skies, we were satisfied to get a musky to eat a bait on the first day of the season, even though it didn't end up in the net. Now it is almost time for Minnesota Musky Opener, which is June 5th.
