The Vikings did not draft a quarterback this past weekend, but they are going to give a chance to one who has quite a bit of baggage.
Ryan Perrilloux, who began his collegiate career as a top recruit at LSU and ended it playing for Jacksonville State in Alabama, will get a tryout with the Vikings next weekend at their three-day rookie camp. The Jacksonville State website reported Sunday that Perrilloux signed with the Vikings but he was not among the 10 players listed as undrafted free agents who agreed to terms Saturday.
More likely the Vikings are going to give Perrilloux a look on a tryout basis. The team does not announce that list of players.
Perrilloux, a native of LaPlace, La., was selected as an All-America quarterback for Jacksonville State this past season as a senior and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the year. He led the conference in passing efficiency (172.58) and established several other single-season school records, including touchdowns responsible for (31), total offense per game (279.3) and total offense per play (8.36).
He ended his two-year career at Jacksonville State as its career leader in passing yards per game (222.3) and total offense per game (260.9) and had a career passing efficiency of 154.9.
Perrilloux was a redshirt at LSU in 2005 but big things were expected of him. He was predicted to take the starting job when JaMarcus Russell left but lost out to Matt Flynn. Nonetheless, Perrilloux helped LSU win the SEC Championship game when Flynn got hurt in 2007. Perrilloux completed 20 passes for 243 yards with a touchdown and an interception and was named the player of the game. Perrilloux was the backup quarterback again, however, by the time the Bowl Championship Series title game came around.
Troubled started shortly thereafter for Perrilloux. Coach Les Miles suspended the quarterback indefinitely in February 2008 after he violated team rules. Perrilloux was then kicked off the team in the spring of 2008. ESPN reported that Perrilloux tested positive for marijuana and that he also had been late to workouts and skipped team meetings.
