FORT MYERS, FLA. -- The Twins picked Drew Butera over Wilson Ramos for their backup catching spot, optioning Ramos to Class AAA Rochester on Wednesday morning.

They also optioned pitcher Glen Perkins to Rochester. Pat Neshek has made the Opening Day roster.

GAME UPDATE

Denard Span, the first batter in the Twins' game against the Yankees in Tampa, lined a pitch into the stands that struck his mother in the chest, according to Twins officials. Span immediately raced to his mother, Wanda Wilson, who was sitting next to the Twins' dugout on the third-base side of the stands. The game was delayed for several minutes while Span and others checked on her condition.

After several minutes she was helped to her feet and taken to a medical room. But she returned to the stands during the bottom of the inning, Twins officials said.

The Associated Press reported that Span left the game in the third inning, telling a team official he wasn't mental into the game. He spent time with his mother after being taken out, according to the AP.

Clay Condrey has weakness in his right shoulder, so the Twins aren't sure if he'll need to go on the DL. If Condrey can't throw on Thursday, lefthander Ron Mahay will likely get that final bullpen spot.

Jose Mijares said he's not concerned about his blurry vision and wants to pitch today. Doctors have looked into it, and while it doesn't sound serious,Gardenhire said it's something that Mijares will need to address eventually.

Update: As expected, the Twins also placed pitcher Joe Nathan and catcher Jose Morales on the disabled list.

Update: GM Bill Smith said Condrey has elbow soreness, likely caused by shoulder weakness, but team is hopeful he'll be ready to start the season.
