Walleye lakes that are large, deep and clear are usually good bets for late fall action--probably because they cool down more slowly than their shallow counterparts do.
My favorite targets, however, are rivers. The Mississippi with its walleye season open year around is my favorite. The St. Croix and Rainy River are also excellent. Smaller rivers like the Rum River, Kettle River and Crow Wing River can also be good and all of them can be fished from shore.
Since the Mississippi opened to year around fishing from Prescott, Wisconsin to the Iowa border, I have fished by boat in every month of the calendar year when the weather allowed, and sometimes when it didn't.
