A St. Paul teenager is recovering after he was run over by the entire length of a train in Newport on Wednesday night.

DeJarriell Burgin, 19, was in serious condition Thursday at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, recovering from a possible head injury he sustained when a northbound Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train passed over him at 11:40 p.m., police said.

Newport Police Chief Veid Muiznieks said train operators called authorities when they spotted the man lying between the tracks about 60 feet south of the Glen Road overpass near Hwy. 61. Operators were unable to stop until the whole train -- 76 rail cars and four locomotives -- passed over the victim, Muiznieks said. It's not clear why he was lying between the tracks, Muiznieks said.
