A shoulder injury limited Gophers cornerback Derrick Wells last season, and he missed spring practice after having surgery. But Wells is back to full strength, running with the first-team defense and making interceptions in practice.

"I feel like I'm back to my level," the senior said Tuesday. "I know this summer really helped, working, getting back used to what I was doing. Just staying healthy is really going to help me."

Campbell bulks up

Outside linebacker De'Vondre Campbell said he weighed in at 240 pounds Tuesday, which is about 30 pounds heavier than he was while playing at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College in 2012.

"I gained about 20 pounds from last fall," the 6-5 Campbell said. "I'm just trying to keep it up there, you know, so I can become a better player."

True freshmen test

Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys said he'll test some true freshmen against the first-team offense in goal-line situations Wednesday. It's the final open practice before Saturday's scrimmage at TCF Bank Stadium.

"See how many of those young kids are ready to go, and how many need to be redshirted," Claeys said.
