FIVE NOTABLE home run DERBY MOMENTS
1990
The Derby goes to Wrigley Field — what could possibly go wrong? Well, the wind was blowing in. Eight hitters combined for five home runs. Cubs fans went home happy, though, as Ryne Sandberg led everyone with three homers, and emcee Bill Murray kept the place entertained.
1993
The Derby was still a one-round, eight-hitter competition, but Ken Griffey Jr. and Juan Gonzalez were tied with seven homers apiece and went through two playoff rounds. Gonzalez won, but Griffey became the first and only player to hit one off the B&O Warehouse at Camden Yards.
1999
Ken Griffey Jr. won his third title that year, still a record, but Mark McGwire (shown with Sammy Sosa) stole the show with his blasts into the Boston night. One 488-foot shot cleared the Green Monster, Landsdowne Street and a parking garage before hitting a billboard.
2006
Ryan Howard hit six balls out of Pittsburgh's PNC Park and into the Allegheny River, including two that splash-landed on the fly. One year later, kayakers filled McCovey Cove in San Francisco, hoping for their own souvenirs, but nobody reached the water that night.
2013
Yoenis Cespedes wasn't an All-Star selection, but his prolific batting practice displays made him a late pick for the Home Run Derby. He didn't disappoint, hitting 17 home runs in Round 1 and edging Bryce Harper 9-8 in the final at New York's Citi Field.
