WAHPETON, N.D. — Two months of uncertainty came to a close this weekend as police said a body found in the Red River was a 20-year-old North Dakota college student who had been missing since early May.
The Wilkin County Sheriff's Office said Saturday evening that the North Dakota Department of Pathology identified the body as Andrew Sadek of Rogers. Sadek was found Friday in the Red River north of Breckenridge. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Sadek was last seen in the early morning of May 1, leaving Nordgaard Hall on the campus of the North Dakota State College of Science. Authorities searched by ground and air and dozens of people combed the Red River and other parts of Wahpeton, North Dakota, where the school is located.
Sadek's parents also said they hired a private investigator because the police investigation had gone cold.
A week after Sadek disappeared, about 100 people turned out for a "Vigil of Hope" for him in the school's gymnasium.
After he'd been missing several days, police released an arrest warrant for Sadek on two counts of delivery of a controlled substance, alleging that he had sold marijuana twice to a police informant. His parents had previously told KFGO Radio in Fargo that they didn't know about the warrant until it was reported by the local media. Investigators said they had kept it secret because they didn't want to hamper their search.
The North Dakota College of Science expressed its condolences following the news of Sadek's death.
"We hope that Andrew's family finds comfort in the many students, faculty and staff who considered him their friend while he was at North Dakota State College of Science," the school said in a statement. "Andrew will always be a member of the Wildcat family, and together we fondly remember the time we shared with this young man."
The college said it would release more information after the coroner finished the initial autopsy report.
