The Vikings announced this afternoon that they have signed running back Jerick McKinnon, a third-round pick in last month's NFL draft, to a rookie contract. Per CBA rules, it is a four-year deal.

McKinnon was a triple-option quarterback at Georgia Southern before transitioning to running back before his senior season. McKinnon, who also got snaps at cornerback and wide receiver, finished his college career with 3,899 rushing yards, 42 rushing touchdowns and 12 passing touchdowns.

The Vikings hope to use McKinnon, who showed off his athleticism and explosiveness with a strong performance at the scouting combine, as a third-down pass-catching back and complement to top running back Adrian Peterson. McKinnon has looked comfortable snatching passes during OTAs.

McKinnon is the last of the team's 10-player draft class for 2014 to sign a rookie contract.
