Can Chrome Do IT?
What they were saying on the days leading up to the Belmont:
“I wasn’t going to come because I’m getting up in years. But if this horse wins the Triple Crown, I want to be there.”
92-year-old Penny Chenery, owner of 1973 Triple Crown champion Secretariat. She pledged to make the trip to Elmont, N.Y., from her home in Boulder, Colo.
“The horse seems to settle wherever [Victor Espinoza] wants him and can pick up in an instant. This horse has got a great chance of pulling it off.”
Steve Cauthen, the jockey for 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed.
“I’m more confident this time. War Emblem had only one way to go: in the front.”
California Chrome’s jockey, Victor Espinoza, who lost out on the Triple Crown aboard War Emblem in 2002.
“It’s going to take a really good horse to beat him. If I can do it, I won’t be too upset. I’ll be elated, to tell you the truth.”
Billy Gowan, trainer for Ride On Curlin
