Kennel Club show at county fairgrounds

The Lake Minnetonka Kennel Club is sponsoring a show featuring 900 dogs from around the state and the county from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8, at the Scott County Fairgrounds, 7151 W. 190th St., near Jordan.

"We have been doing this for over 50 years,'' said Jackie Anderson, publicity chairman for the group. "We work all year to get it just perfect. We are hoping people can come and enjoy it.''

The show will be judged and a Best in Show chosen both days about 4:30 p.m.

Admission is free but parking is $5. The 4-H will sell food.

Besides the shows, there will be obedience demonstrations, performances and opportunities for people to learn about different breeds, Anderson said. The show will go on rain or shine.

DAKOTA COUNTY

Forum to discuss aging population

Residents, business owners and government leaders are invited to participate in a summit to discuss the impact on society as baby boomers age. Dakota County Public Health is sponsoring the "Living Longer: The Power and Possibilities, Strengthening Communities for a Lifetime" summit from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, at Rosemount Community Center, 13885 S. Robert Trail, Rosemount.

Keynote speaker John Migliaccio, former director of research and gerontology at MetLife Mature Market Institute, will talk about demographic changes, boomer trends and innovation in aging. Breakout sessions will feature topics such as housing, transportation, a multigenerational workforce, long-term care and mental illness in older adults.

The cost is $25, which includes lunch. For registration information, contact Park Nicollet Institute at 952-993-3531.

SHAKOPEE

New trash/recycling collection is in effect

Shakopee began a five-year contract with Republic Services on June 1 for garbage and recycling services.

The contract affects single-family dwellings, duplexes, triplexes and townhouses in Shakopee that receive municipal water and sewer services and have individual cart service.

Every household recently received two new carts — one for garbage, one for recycling.

Residents can begin using the carts on their normal service day the week of June 1.

The city and Republic Services are introducing single-sort recycling as part of the new contract. With single-sort, residents may place all of their recyclables in one yellow-lidded, wheeled recycling cart. They will not need to sort or bundle items.

"We're very pleased to offer single-sort recycling," said Mayor Brad Tabke. "It's something residents have been requesting, and it will make it easier than ever for households to recycle more of the products they use on an everyday basis."

New scoreboard is up at Schleper Stadium

A new scoreboard now overlooks Schleper Stadium in Shakopee.

The scoreboard, installed recently, has an arched design and accent clock. It is approximately 23 feet high by 36 feet wide. It replaces the ballpark's 23-year-old scoreboard, whose aging technology was making it difficult to find replacement parts.

Located in Tahpah Park, the 500-seat sports stadium is home to the Shakopee Coyotes, Shakopee Indians, Men's 35 and Over, and the Shakopee Youth Baseball Association. To pay for the scoreboard, the Shakopee Amateur Baseball Association sold advertising space on the new scoreboard and the city contributed from its park fund. Greystone Construction installed the sign as an in-kind donation.

Northfield

Donations to YMCA will be matched

The Northfield Area Family YMCA is offering to match any business donation up to $50,000 through June 20 as its fundraising campaign for its new building continues.

The new Y Community Center, slated to open in mid-September, is a $9.3 million project funded by private and corporate donors. $7.5 million has been raised to date and the Y hopes to open its doors as a debt-free facility. The match is being provided by Just Food Co-op, Heartman Insurance and an anonymous donor. Donors can structure their gift to be paid over the next 5 years, and gifts are tax-deductible.

"A new Y Community Center will make the area more attractive to new families, enhancing our quality of life and encouraging more people to live, eat and play in our community," said YMCA Executive Director Virginia Kaczmarek.

The facility, located behind Target in Northfield, will include a community gathering space, indoor walking track, indoor pool, gym, supervised child care area, group exercise studio and wellness floor.
